Advancing competitiveness of the local foundry industry

26 February 2021

The National Foundry Technology Network (NFTN) is proud to exhibit at the 2020 Africa Rail Virtually – Africa’s first fully digital event – where Africa’s rail leaders come together to share expertise and navigate challenges that all are facing.  The conference and exhibition takes place from 18 – 20 October 2020, fully online and is free to attend. Since we can’t meet in person, visit our virtual exhibition stand and engage with our team on the event platform.

An initiative of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic),  the National Foundry Technology Network was established in 2008 to advance the competitiveness of the local foundry industry, especially distressed foundries.

The rail industry sector is one of the strategic sectors, where interventions are supported to ensure local foundries comply with the requirements of this sector. Key support interventions offered by the NFTN to foundries to support localisation of manufactured components are:

  • Capacity building – product and tooling development of new components
  • Skills development in core foundry processes such moulding, pattern making and smelting to bridge skills shortages in this industry
  • Regulatory compliance to ensure that foundries comply with industry regulations and norms

There are various foundries locally that the NFTN has supported with interventions to be competent to manufacture rail components to international specifications such as AAR.
