Quality and Energy efficiency improvement workshops;

Morris Murray (MMAA global) is in South Africa in November

Who should attend? All foundries (ferrous and non-ferrous) are welcome to attend since the presentation will be relevant to all.

The current workshop topics being considered are:

  • Quality improvements through knowing the real cost of porosity and how to reduce porosity rejects, metal melt quality improvements
  • Energy usage reduction and energy efficiency improvements in foundries.

NFTN will be launching the practical Energy Management Booklet, for day to day energy efficient advice in the plant (Author: Carl Reinhard, editor: Morris Murray). Participants attending the workshop will receive a free copy of this booklet, the booklet will be available from NFTN after the workshop at a minimal cost.

The organisers would like to arrange workshops in the three main foundry provinces of South Africa. We are currently looking at the following dates:

Workshops shall only be held if sufficient interest have been shown from foundries. To get an indication of your interest, please take a few minutes to respond by selecting the date and region above and completing your response on the web page.

PANEL OF EXPERTS: Update on Carl Reinhard

As reported in the July Newsletter we will be profiling the Panel of Experts featured on the website. These profiles will feature the most important projects that they are currently working on. This month’s expert is Carl Reinhard, a well-known professional in the foundry industry.

Casting Services together with MMAA Global is currently involved in a number of projects. These range from energy savings to die and component design. Casting Services is also carrying out foundry layout and rationalizations. Included in the foundry layout and rationalization is product to (manufacturing) process fit. We have seen cost downs from weight savings in components of 10% to 25% due to improved die designs able to cast thinner walled parts and changes to component design through the use of finite element stress analysis (FEA). We have seen cost downs from yield improvements from 30% to 60% due to reduced energy, reduced cycle times and reduced metal losses. The improved runner designs and thermal improvements also increased the quality. Further to this in the foundry layout and rationalization projects we have noted reduction in labour usage of 30% to 50%.
