Seventeen of the eighteen learners have completed the first 6 months of their learnership at ArcelorMittal. An article to this effect was also published in Castings SA (volume 11 number 3, page 10). Some of the areas of learning already completed to date are:
- Introduction to the Foundry Processes (Process Theory)
- Support structures in the manufacturing business
- Individual’s Role within Business
- Work in a Team
- Computer, time and life style
- Communication and Numeracy in the workplace
- Use mathematics to investigate rational numbers
- Measure, estimate and calculate physical quantities
- SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality)
- Transportation and Lifting equipment
- Principles of Chemistry and Physics
- Understand and deal with HIV/AIDS
- Perform basic fire fighting
John Davies and Mpho Mabotja conducted an overall audit on the progress of the students on 13 and 14 December 2010. Feedback on the standard is excellent. “ArcelorMittal has done an excellent job with the generic learning of the students” says Davies. “If we keep up the standard of learning that ArcelorMittal started, we will have a strong group entering the industry in 2013” say Tony O’Brien from Atlantis Foundry, another of the pilot sites who received the learners back after the December break. It should be noted that these learners are not being trained for ArcelorMittal, Atlantis Foundry and Scaw only, but will be made available to the industry as a whole once they have completed the learnerships.
Meet the learners and see what some of them have to say about their training so far. NFTN shall be tracking their progress and give feedback as they reach certain milestones in their learnership.
The CPF project team would like to express their sincere thanks to ArcelorMittal for doing such an excellent job with the learners the past few months.
The CPF project team spent the last few months on materials development alongside the MerSETA consultant and Subject Matter Experts (SME). Attention was given to the rest of NQF level 2. Module 1 will serve as the theoretical material for all 3 trades, module 2, 4 and 5 will serve as the practical module for the melter, moulder and foundry patternmaker.

Hello to everyone.
Im one of the foundry learners, and would like to thank again everyone who made the programme possible.
At first i was happy with the progress of the learnership, because i could see that the organiser’s were commited, but of late everything we as the patternmaker thought was a success is now fading away, nothing seem to be promising for us anymore,we move from one place to the other without progress of our own.If anyone out there can please give us light,we would very much appreciate it

would like to say thanks a lot by the opportunity we were given to explore and make the best out of our lives. We thank the organisers for a job well done for the firts 6 month of our training, merseta, john davis, university of johannesburg and all parties involved. At first everything was a success because we saw and felt the progress and now im sory to say but we do not see any of the progress more especially on the pattern making side. I am one of the pattern makers and i am dissapointed at how things have turned. I was not expecting this kinds of delays as the organiser knew exactly how the schedule was, they had to do everythng needed in advance. Now we are waiting in frastration and not sure about our future as pattern makers any more. Any one who is part of the organisers and has a light concerning this, is welcome to send information on my email.

Dear Tumaeza
We are aware that we currently have a problem with the patternmakers, however we are in the process of sorting this one out. Please give me a call if you still would like to talk about it.
Kind Regards
